The Mont Saint-Michel Bay

Mont-Saint-Michel, the "Wonder of the West", rises up in the middle of a vast bay with the largest tides in Europe. It was at the request of Archangel Michael, the” head of the Heavenly Host”, that Aubert, bishop of Avranches, built the first church here and dedicated it on 16 October 709. In 966, at the request of the Duke of Normandy, a Benedictine community took up residence on the rock. Over the next eight centuries they continued to built, enlarge, and embellish their Abbey, to such an extent that as early as the 13th century it was already referred to as the “Wonder”. It is an architectural masterpiece, or rather masterpiece of multiple architectural styles, where people can still meditate in the pre-Romanesque crypt, admire the power and majesty of the Romanesque art, and marvel at the beauty of the Gothic elements.
